Where my musings come to die

Traffic and a show plus 9/11

“Shortly after (or maybe during) that day, our president at the time, a little fuckhead no one liked, handed over the reins to the most psychotic elements of his administration. In the vast national wave of jingoism, paranoia, dread, and fear that followed, he and his friends led us into an unrelated war they’d been planning beforehand, allowed the CIA to wiretap and torture anyone they liked (and encouraged the CIA to wiretap and torture even more than they were comfortable with!), and regularly insisted that our memory of that day should not be sullied with critical thinking or expressions of anything other than still-palpable fear.”

I hate the memorial, the mourning, the reflection, the reminder of that dreadful day ten years ago. I see the pundits, the press, the politicians rehashing and I get so very angry because of who we became after. The kicked up defense industry, the wars, the fear and torture, the rise of the right wing in a way that I truly think could not have happened with out the terrorist attack.

I’m headed to the city tomorrow because it was the only day I could get tickets for the Book of Mormons. It’s my gift to my son who graduated high school and is headed off to be a tuba player for the Marines. I’m looking forward to it because I love going in to the city so very much. I love the feel, the smell, the energy (the food!) and tomorrow will be happy but the memories and angst of remembering, never forgetting, will be permeable. It’s gonna be a bitch getting in to the city. We’re going over the GW, parking up by my brother’s place in Inwood. Hopefully if we leave five hours early (we’re about an hour away) we can make the show.
